William Harold Godfrey

December 1, 1930 — October 2, 2021

William Harold “Dutch” Godfrey, 90, of Bluewell, WV, formerly of Maybeury, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021 at his home.  Born December 1, 1930 in Hemphill, WV, he was a son of the late Edward and Ann Thomas Godfrey. Dutch was a retired coal miner with 38 years of service, was a very proud member of the UMWA and was President of local Union 9534. He taught his whole family to respect, honor, love, and be a good moral person. He was dedicated to his family and was always a hard worker to support his family. His 72 years of marriage to Nancy showed us all what true love is. His family and friends came first, and he continuously showed compassion and love throughout his difficult journey. He will truly be missed. Dutch was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Powhatan, WV. He played baseball for McComas High School and was drafted into the Minor League. In addition to his parents, Dutch was preceded in death by step-mother, Dorothy Godfrey; step-mother, Alma Godfrey; sister, Dixie Puckett; and grandson, Christopher Zande.

Those left to cherish Dutch’s memory are his loving wife of 72 years, Nancy Copolo Godfrey; son, James Vincent Godfrey and wife, Janie of Bluefield, WV; daughters, Patricia Zande and husband, Larry Sr. of Bluefield, WV, and Theresa Thomason and husband Willie of Bluefield, WV; sisters, Imogene Repass of Tampa, FL, and Arlee Moore of Toccoa, GA; 7 grandchildren, Larry, Christopher, Laura and Kara Zande, James Godfrey and wife Missy, and Eddie Godfrey, Sr., and Jason and wife, Blaine Thomason; 9 great-grandchildren, Analeigh Zande, James Godfrey III, Jolena Hill, Eddie Jr., Cameron, and Coleson Godfrey, Tesla, Spencer, and Clay Thomason; 2 great-great grandchildren, Alaina and Eliona Godfrey. The family would like to thank Hospice and Dr. Schor and his staff for the care and support given during this time. Gratitude is also extended to Dr. Qazi and staff.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Powhatan Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Binny Mulackal officiating. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Mausoleum where James Godfrey, Eddie Godfrey, Cameron Godfrey, Jason Thomason, Larry Zande, Jr., and Eddie Godfrey, Jr. will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends, prior to services at the church, from 10:00-11:00AM.

Flowers are appreciated, or you may make a memorial contribution to the Powhatan Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
