In Loving Memory of Vernon Thomas Adams
We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of Vernon Thomas Adams, who departed from this world on October 29, 2025, at Ames Family Hospice in West Lake, Ohio, at the age of 80. Born on July 10, 1945, in the heart of West Virginia, Vernon was the cherished son of the late Joseph L. and Lillian (Adams) Harrell. His legacy is carried forward by his loving family, as well as those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Vernon's life was rich with passion and devotion. He served time in the United States Army, with the rank of a staff sergeant during Vietnam. During that time he not only drove military tanks, but earned a medal as a rifle expert. He was an avid sports enthusiast, he not only played various sports but also relished in watching and supporting local games. His impressive collection of 125 trophies reflects his athleticism and deep appreciation for competition. Beyond the field, Vernon was known for his profound love and dedication to his children and grandchildren, whose joy brought him immense happiness, along with his beloved cats that added warmth to his home.
He is proceeded in death by loving family members, including his grandparents Floyd and Carrie (Cannady) Adams, and two of his own children, Vernon Adams Jr. and Cortez Martin. Vernon also joins in eternal rest with his brothers, Melvin D. Harrell and Joseph A. Harrell, as well as his sisters, Pandora S. Harrell and Wanda C. Harrell.
Vernon leaves behind a remarkable family: his four children – Kecia Cooper-Bouseman of Greensboro, North Carolina; Vanessa Adams (Chris) of Cleveland, Ohio; Timothy Adams (Karie) of Bluefield, West Virginia; and Mackenzie Duncan of Orange Park, Florida. He is also survived by three brothers, Kenneth Adams of Los Angeles, California; Ronald (Ramona) Harrell of Freeman, West Virginia; and Ernest Harrell of Gahanna, Ohio; as well as three sisters, Sharon (Robert) Stills of Gahanna, Ohio; Ada (Duane) Lyles-Harrell of Pickerington, Ohio; and Gwendolyn Akrobettoe of Gahanna, Ohio. Additionally, his spirit will live on in the hearts of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and extended family members, including Aunt Louise Battle of Orlando, Florida, and Uncle Elbert (Dan) Harrell of Columbus, Ohio, alongside a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
As we reflect upon Vernon’s vibrant spirit and his unwavering love for family and sports, we find comfort in shared memories and the lasting impact he made in our lives. He will be remembered fondly and missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park where friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Mercer County Veteran's Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Cravens-Shires Funeral Home and McConnell Funeral Home is serving the Adams family.
