The family of Sarah Maxine McKenzie Scott is deeply saddened to announce her passing on February 2, 2026 at the age of 95.
Born on December 25, 1930 in Mercer County, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Emily Wright McKenzie and Ferdinand Green McKenzie. Maxine lived a full and remarkable life devoting her life to her family and her faith. From her earliest days, she was committed to honoring her Lord and Savior, being baptized on June 1st, 1941 and faithfully attended Falls Mills Christian Church where she was a member for over 80 years. One of her greatest passions was teaching the young girls Sunday School class, working with the youth and investing in their lives.
Maxine was deeply loved by her family and friends and often was “life of the party” at gatherings with her stories and laughter.
She graduated from Graham High School in 1948 and was a lifelong avid football fan, even receiving a shout-out during the G-Men’s 2025 football season for her upcoming 95th birthday.
Maxine married the love of her life, Walter C. Scott, Jr, and enjoyed over 50 years together, and the raising of 3 children, before he passed away in March of 2000. As Jr. became disabled, she entered the work force, working at Virginia Foods where she earned many awards for her dedication and work ethic blazing the trail as one of the first women to become a buyer.
Upon retirement, she continued to enjoy her family, travelling, and attending her beloved G-Men and Hokie football games even up into her late 80’s. As her health declined, she continued to listen or watch games, often cheering along.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her four half-brothers, her sister and her great-granddaughter.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Euganda Ferguson, Chris Scott (wife, Marti), and Wally Scott; 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; her sister, Libby Tabor and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 6th, from 5-7 p.m. at Falls Mills Christian Church. A service to celebrate Maxine’s life and pay tribute to her memory will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 7th, at Falls Mills Christian Church with Ron Tabor officiating. Burial service will be at noon on Thursday, Feb. 12th at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, WV.
Donations can be made to Christian Acres, 1351 Evangelism Rd., Bluefield, WV 24701.
