Rev. Richard Blane Sturgell

In the early hours of Tuesday, March 29, 2022, our father, Rev. Richard B. Sturgell (Ricky) said his final good byes to this Earth and gained his heavenly wings. He was 73. Rev. Sturgell was born in June of 1948 to Cypress and Violet Sturgell of Kimball, WV. He was the middle son of three boys. After graduating from Welch High School, he was drafted in the Army along with his brother, Winford Sturgell, to serve in the Vietnam War. From returning home, he got a job with a local coal company. After returning home, he got a job with the local coal company. Rev. Sturgell was a minister for the Church of God and pastored two churches while in their association. He was a retired minister with the Pentecostal holiness church association where he pastored two more churches. He was a devoted member of the UMWA here he served as president of the local chapter until his last days. He was a longtime resident of Thorpe. In 1970, he met and married the love of his life, Brenda K. Finley. They had two children together, Kimberly and Kevin. They spent 47 years together before she gained her heavenly wings. He was welcomed to Heaven by his wife, Brenda K. Sturgell, parents, Cypress and Violet Sturgell and older brother, Winford Sturgell. His surviving family members include his daughter, Kimberly (Barry) Wright of Bluefield, VA, son, Kevin (Jamie) Sturgell of Thorpe, WV, and his youngest brother, Chris (Lisa) Sturgell of Bluefield, VA and his five grandchildren, Garrett, Grant, Anna, Blane, and Levi, plus several nieces, nephews, and loving cousins. A memorial service will be held at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Rev. Ronald Felts officiating on Friday, April 8, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Military Honors will be performed by the Mercer County Veterans Guard. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. The family is accepting online condolences at www.cravens-shires.com. Friends may call one hour prior to services, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home. The Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, 3431 Coal Heritage Road, Bluefield, WV is in charge of arrangements.
