Her legacy is imprinted in small, enduring ways—through a comforting embrace, a kind word, and her ability to make every person she met feel seen and cherished.
Mary Elizabeth Klimaitis, loving matriarch, friend, and a kind presence in the lives of many, departed this world on July 12, 2026, peacefully at her beloved home on Airy Street in Bluefield, West Virginia. She drew her last breath just one day after celebrating her eighty-fourth birthday, closing her walk with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the town where her story first began.
Born on July 11, 1942, in Bluefield, Mary’s life was filled with steadfast devotion—woven together by threads of love, resilience, and quiet grace. She was rooted to her home and community, carrying with her the values instilled by her upbringing in West Virginia's rolling hills. Through years marked by transformation and change, she remained a comforting constant, extending warmth and kindness to those around her. She was a prayer warrior who consistently prayed for her family and friends.
Mary’s life was defined by everyday acts of kindness that revealed the quiet dignity and generosity of her spirit. Her most memorable event was being born again by being baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ with receiving the Holy Spirit speaking in a heavenly language. Her family, to whom she was wholly devoted, found their anchor in her presence. Surviving her are her son, Ken Klimaitis, and daughter-in-law, Cindy Klimaitis, who carry forward the lessons of love and integrity she imparted. Her grandchildren—Devin, Jamie, Josh, Charity, and Contessa Klimaitis—were bright points of pride in her later years, each one touched deeply by her gentle encouragement and unwavering belief in their own unique gifts.
Mary prided herself as an outstanding homemaker who was a master cook and decorator for her family. She loved planting flowers and nurturing her pets who she doted over throughout her life. All those who shared Mary’s life remember the way she welcomed both joy and hardship with equal tenderness. In recent months, she faced a short but valiant battle with cancer—a challenge she met with characteristic courage and peace, providing comfort even as she was the one in need.
Her sense of family extended beyond her own household. Mary leaves behind her brother, Joe Turner, and her sisters, Margaret Smith and Cathy Whitt, who mourn her absence while treasuring the bonds they built over a lifetime. The countless memories they forged together, in laughter and hardship alike, form a legacy of unshakeable kinship. She will be forever the oldest sister who was like a mother and a best friend to them each.
As the community of Bluefield gathers to honor and reminisce about Mary, her absence is felt with a profound sense of loss, but also with gratitude for all she bestowed upon those she loved. Her legacy is imprinted in small, enduring ways—through a comforting embrace, a kind word, and her ability to make every person she met feel seen and cherished.
A funeral service honoring the life of Mary Elizabeth Klimaitis will be held at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, located at 3431 Coal Heritage Road, Bluefield, WV 24701, on July 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Her family invites all those whose lives she touched to join in celebrating a life marked by deep love, steady faith, and the simple, powerful acts of kindness that defined who she was at her core.
In this time of sorrow, may the fond memories of Mary’s gentle spirit and unwavering love bring comfort and peace to all who mourn her passing.
