Gary Lane Penland

Gary Lane Penland, 68, of Bluefield, WV passed away at his home on July 26, 2025. Born on December 25, 1956, he is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Lynn Penland; his daughter, Michelle Penland (Aaron McBride); stepdaughters, Maria Jenkins and Shannon Neal; grandchildren, Avett McBride, Shaniah Neal, Roslyn Neal, Alaina Menefee, and Alissa Menefee. He is also survived by his siblings, Patricia “Susie” (Steve) Adkins, Mildred “Millie” (Dar) Ward, Bobby (Michelle) Penland, and Danny (Samantha) Penland. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles that he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Clifford Penland, and his brother, Randy (Linda) Penland.

Known to many by his nickname, “Girt,” Gary was a man with a passion for the Lord and asked everyone he met if they knew Jesus. He also had a passion for antique cars, riding his motorcycle, hunting, classic rock, and spending time with family. He worked for most of his life as a skilled carpenter and took great pride in home improvement projects, always ready to lend a hand or take on a renovation. He cherished the simple joys of life and was happiest when surrounded by those he loved.

Pastor Keith Warren of Liberty Baptist Church of Strasburg, Virginia will be officiating the service. Liberty Baptist Church was Gary and family’s home church for over 13 years before moving to Bluefield.

Gary was taken excellent care of for over two years by a very sweet compassionate team of Hospice caregivers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassus (Hospice Care) 1330 Mercer Street, Suite 1, Princeton, WV 24740.

Services will be held Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell, WV. A visitation will held one hour prior to services from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home.
