On Sunday, February 8, 2026, Gary Wayne Duncan, 71, passed peacefully into eternity with his Savior.

Born June 5, 1954 to the late Lewis and Eunice Beggs Duncan, Gary was a lifelong resident of Montcalm, WV and attended the Montcalm Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Duncan, and sisters, Carol Reed and Patricia Blevins.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sister and caregiver Shirley Helmondollar, brother and caregiver Bobby Duncan, siblings Tommy (Linda) Duncan, Linda (Gary) Kirchoff, and Diane Piat. He also leaves behind 16 nieces and nephews, 35 great-nieces and -nephews, and 26 great-great-nieces and -nephews – all of which he knew by name and cared deeply for.

Gary lived a life marked by unconditional love and many simple joys. He had a unique passion for trains. Watching a train pass and hearing its whistle brought such excitement to him.

He enjoyed watching sports (especially the Cincinnati Reds) and often coached and umpired from the sidelines. He could regularly be found organizing his papers and working puzzles.

Every year, Gary patiently awaited Christmastime – including the lights, gifts, and many familiar traditions. His joy made Christmas feel warmer and more meaningful for everyone around him.

Family was the center of his world, and Gary’s family and friends cherished him deeply. Gary had a gentle way of reminding us what truly matters; his life taught patience, compassion, and authentic love. His memory lives on in every train whistle heard in the distance, every Christmas light that glows a little brighter, and in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him. A Celebration of Life service was held on Wednesday, February 11, 10:30 a.m. at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home with his great-nephew, Pastor Travis Helmondollar, officiated. The family will receive loved ones 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, make a memorial donation to Montcalm Church of Christ, Food Pantry (PO Box 576, Montcalm, WV 24737).

Cravens-Shires Funeral Home is serving the Duncan family.
