Freida Gail "Granny" Cason, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, in the presence of her loving family. Born on January 3, 1946, in Pulaski, Virginia, Freida was the cherished firstborn of her family, embarking on a life that would be marked by dedication, kindness, and an unyielding love for those closest to her.

Freida’s upbringing in Pulaski shaped her gentle spirit and her nurturing, reliable nature. As the first of five sisters, she embraced her role with a sense of responsibility and warmth, a quality that would become a hallmark of her life. She was known within the Bluefield–Princeton, West Virginia area not only as a devoted family member, but as a steadfast friend and neighbor.

Her career was spent in service of both her family and her community. Freida worked at Dairy Queen in Bluefield, Virginia, and later at the Sheraton Inn Hotel in Fredericksburg, Virginia. In her professional life, as with her personal one, she was known for her kindness, strong work ethic, and an infectious smile that greeted every colleague and customer. Perhaps just as significant, Freida gave selflessly as a caregiver to many family members, providing comfort and support during their times of need.

Freida often said, “Family First & God Above.” This guiding principle revealed itself in everything she did. Her faith was a cornerstone, and she was a good and faithful Christian woman whose gentle words and actions left a lasting impact on all who knew her. She delighted in organizing family cookouts; and felt genuine happiness on trips to Myrtle Beach, especially when feeling the sand beneath her feet and listening to the waves with her loved ones. Her bond with the family pet, Liberty, was another testament to her affectionate and compassionate soul.

Freida’s love extended across generations. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Griffith and Dollie Griffith; her grandparent Ella Griffith; and her beloved sisters Linda, Peggy, Carylon, and Brenda. Though she mourned the loss of those who went before her, the stories and lessons she carried from them enriched her own family’s legacy.

She is survived by her children, Lora Duncan and Samuel Asbury; 13 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Cravens-Shire Funberal Home in Bluewell with Rev. David Bailey officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. Daniel Asbury, Chance Mitchell, Ryan Mitchell, Adian Poore, Sammy Fowler, and Corey Proffitt will serve as pallbearers.

Freida Gail Carson’s enduring legacy rests in the values she lived every day: family, faith, compassion, and kindness. She will be dearly missed, and her memory will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing her.
