Claudia Sutphin Davis Barrett, born February 20, 1943, in Pocahontas, Virginia, passed away on August 20, 2026, at the age of 83.
Claudia was preceded in death by her husband, James Noel Barrett; her parents, Gladys Marie Crawford Sutphin and Giles Benjamin Sutphin; and her brothers, Jerome "Jerry" Sutphin and Larry Sutphin.
She is survived by her son, Lorne Blane Davis, and his wife, Pam Davis; and her grandchildren, Erinn, Marina, and Jacen. She is also survived by her nieces, Kim Thompson, her husband, Melvin, and their daughter, Samantha; and Donna Morris and her sons, Joseph and Jacob; as well as her cousin, Connie Bishop, and her husband, Otis.
Claudia was deeply grateful for the special friends, neighbors, helpers, and caregivers who were part of her life, including Otis and Connie Bishop, Chris Johnson, Pam Helmandollar, Geraldine Rose, Shannon, Kim, Chloe, Samantha, and Dakota Wilson, Becky Meadows.
Anyone who knew Claudia knew how much she loved animals. Over the course of 41 years, she rescued 21 cats and dogs. Many were found along the side of the road or simply followed her home during one of her many walking excursions. These furry companions soon became family members and an important part of her life.
Claudia also enjoyed gardening, painting, crafts, and jigsaw puzzles. She especially loved decorating for the Christmas season. She cherished meeting, talking with, and helping the people in her life. One of her favorite pastimes was spending Saturdays at Mercer Mall with her many friends, celebrating birthdays or going out to eat using her treasured collection of gift cards.
If there is one legacy those who knew Claudia can agree upon, it is that she lived life to the fullest and on her own terms, in her own way. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
At Claudia's request, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mercer County Animal Shelter.
