Charles Phillip Monitor, 82, of Nemours, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Rich Creek, Va, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 1, 1943, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Charles was the son of the late Anthony F. Monitor and Emily P. Monitor.
Charles honorably served his country in the United States Army, where he was awarded the Marksman Combat Award for his exemplary service. Following his military career, he dedicated over 30 years of faithful service as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was a proud member of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), Local Chapter 2420, and was deeply committed to the causes he served. In 1996, he was recognized for his efforts with the National Food Drive Proclamation.
An active member of his community, Charles was involved with the Nemours Ruritan Club and the American Legion. He also served as a devoted caregiver to his brother-in-law, Roy Rose, for nearly eight years—an example of his selflessness and compassion.
Charles was preceded in death by his beloved great-granddaughter, Adalyn Grace Rose; grandson, Jeremy Wayne Fox; his parents, Emily and Anthony Monitor; brother, Gary Monitor; and sister, Nancy Zinn.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 56 years, Grace G. Monitor; his daughters Karen Fox and husband Wayne of Ballard, WV, and Sharon Sullivan and husband David of Fredericksburg, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Christina Rose (husband Chris), Ashley Freeman (husband Ty), Amber Yancey (husband Coty), Matthew Fox (fiancée Krystal), and Sean Sullivan (fiancée Alexis); as well as eight beloved great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy.
Charles will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to his family and community, and the gentle kindness he extended to everyone he met. His legacy of service and love will live on through the many lives he touched.
A service to celebrate Charles’s life will be held at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 11:00AM with Pastor David Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell.
Friends may call prior to services, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Heritage Hall Rich Creek Nursing Home for the exceptional care they provided the last two years.
