Charles "Gene" Luster, lovingly known as Pop Pop, passed away unexpectedly at home on October 31, 2025, at the age of 71. Born in Welch, West Virginia, Gene lived a full and faithful life that took him across state lines, including time spent living and working in North Carolina, before settling in Bluefield, WV.
He was a man of deep faith, a devoted family man, and a lover of the great outdoors. A proud Pentecostal believer, Gene worshipped at Deliverance Temple Church, where his faith was a guiding light throughout his life. He found joy and peace in nature—hunting, fishing, and spending time outside were among his favorite pastimes.
Gene was born to Burley Luster and Betty Mitchem and was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings: Motoe, Buddy, Shorty, Cecil, Duke, and Debbie. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Gina Luster, with whom he shared countless adventures and a love for “running the roads” together. He is also survived by his sisters Barbara Graham (Johnny) and Ruby Jackson; and his children Adam Luster (Sylvia), Larry Bailey, Kristina Luster, and Marina Mills (Derrick).
He was a cherished grandfather to Kaylee (Nick), Madeline, Giniya, Gabby, and Lydia; and to Deacon, Zayne, Quincy, and Stetson. He was a proud great-grandfather to Colton, Everleigh, and Iz'Mere. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will carry his memory in their hearts.
Gene was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the stories shared around family gatherings, and the faith he instilled in those closest to him.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Craven-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell, WV, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. Immediate family is asked to arrive at 1:30 PM.
