IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carolyn Denise
Cosby
February 15, 1953 – March 4, 2026
Carolyn Denise Starkey Cosby, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, peacefully departed this life on the morning of March 4th, 2026, in Bramwell, West Virginia. Surrounded by the warmth and love of her family, Carolyn’s courageous battle with cancer came to an end, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and unwavering devotion.
Born on February 15th, 1953, Carolyn blossomed into a woman whose radiant spirit touched countless lives. She was a devoted graduate of Bramwell High School’s Class of 1971 and pursued her passion for knowledge with remarkable dedication. Earning her Associate’s Degree in Business from Valley College of Technology in 1994, she furthered her academic journey by graduating with a Degree in Business Law from Mountain State University in Beckley in 2005. Her thirst for learning and self-improvement was a testament to her tireless spirit.
Carolyn’s professional life was marked by steadfast commitment and excellence. For 22 years, she served as a Payroll Clerk at the Hills Department store in Bluefield, West Virginia. Following that chapter, she took her expertise to the West Virginia Citizens Conservation Corporation in Beckley, where she led the payroll department with distinction for a decade. In 2016, Carolyn joined Saunders Staffing Inc. in Bluefield as the Beckley Branch Manager. There, she flourished, managing nurse placements across the Northwest Counties of West Virginia, a role she fulfilled with heart and dedication until her diagnosis in 2024.
Those fortunate enough to know Carolyn will remember her as “The Life of the Party,” affectionately dubbed “The Ringleader” by her daughters in Christ. Her infectious sense of humor and mischievous wit sparked joy and laughter wherever she went. Carolyn was renowned for her ability to say the most unexpected and delightfully outrageous things with an innocent expression that never failed to leave friends and family struggling to stifle their laughter. Her home was a haven of hospitality; she loved hosting family dinners, especially during the holidays. Christmas held a special place in her heart, where her creativity and love shone brightest. Each year, she delighted everyone with her incredible Sweet Potato Pies, lovingly crafted and shared during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings, creating memories treasured by many.
Carolyn’s compassionate nature and genuine, caring heart left an indelible mark on all who encountered her. Known for her wise counsel wrapped in tough love and sincere affection, she was a rock to those who sought guidance or comfort. Her nurturing soul extended beyond her biological family to embrace her bonus children and grandchildren, whom she loved fiercely and treated as her own. The depth of her love and kindness is a testament to the extraordinary woman she was.
Her proudest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren — the joys of her life. Carolyn cherished her role as Nana, celebrating the arrival and growth of every grandchild with boundless affection and pride. To her, family was everything, and nothing brought her more happiness than the laughter and love of her grands.
Carolyn was also deeply connected to her church, The Faith Center Church, where for over three decades she lifted her voice in praise and worship every Sunday since 1994, sharing her faith and spirit with those around her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Melvin “Butch” Cosby; her son, Bryan D. Cosby; her daughters, Tiffany R. Cross and Hope I. Byard (bonus daughter); and her treasured grandchildren, Samara L. Cosby and Khalil B. Cross, and Grandpup Shy R. Cross. Carolyn’s sisters, Yvonne Buchanan, Mary Cruz, Barbera (Xavier) Strain, Pecolia (Clarence) McWoodson, Sterette (Margaret) Daniels, and Raynette Daniels, along with lifelong friend Vera (Charles) Buchanan, also carry forward her memory with love.
Carolyn joins her beloved parents, Willie and Rebecca F. Holt; her mother-in-law, Kate E. Cosby Cardwell; her brothers Jerry and James C. Holt and James R. Daniels; nieces Candace Starkey Alexander and Jerri Starkey Morris; nephew RaShaad D. Cosby; and best friend Paulette E. Byard, reunited now in eternal peace.
Carolyn Denise Cosby’s life was a beacon of joy, love, and strength. Her laughter and light, her teachings and tenderness, will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she has left this earthly realm, the enduring impact of her life’s story remains—a true celebration of a remarkable woman, a loving mother, a devoted wife, and a cherished friend. She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and eternally loved.
