Barbara Ann Shumate Polatz 76, Of Bluefield, passed away on August 26th, 2024 in Elkins, WV.
Born in Newport, Rhode Island, she is the daughter of the late Estel Shumate and the late Margaret Smith Shumate. She is the second born child, and eldest sister of 6 siblings. She took pride in being a great sister. Barbara graduated from Ribault Senior High School in Jacksonville, FL in 1965. She became a resident of Florida and stayed for many years before returning to West Virginia. Barbara was a homemaker most of her life. Her wisdom, her laughter, and her kindness will forever be missed by her whole family.
Along with her beloved mother and father, Barbara is proceeded in death by her siblings, Sandra Shumate Lares, Deborah Shumate, and Michael Shumate; in laws, Connie Shumate, David Smith, and Madonna Shumate. Heaven holds the ones we love, keeping them safe until we meet again.
Barbara leaves behind a son, Eric Polatz of Gulfport, MS, 2 granddaughters, Julia Ann and Christina, a brother, Richard Shumate, of the home, a sister, Patsy Smith of Bluefield, VA, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and greats nephews whom all adored their aunt, including a special nephew Brian Shumate who served as her caregiver for the past few years.

A memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1003 Wyoming St, Bluefield WV on Saturday, September 7th at 11 am.
